Bald Eagles Back At Turtle Bay In Redding California

Bald Eagle photo courtesy of Greg Barnett and Record Searchlight

Both Patriot and Liberty were spotted close to their nest in a cottonwood stand Monday afternoon near Turtle Bay off Highway 44 in Redding, California, according to Teri Lhuillier, one of the eagles advocates.  This eagle couple raised a pair of eaglets last year despite the construction on the bridge spanning the Sacramento River amid great controversy.  A webcam has now been installed so we can all watch the action if Patriot and Liberty decide to use this nest for their next year’s brood.

@Thomas this is a truly amazing story as CalTrans, the California Department of Transportation, had placed a cone over the eagles nest back in November of 2007 to try to deter them from nesting here. The reason was they didn’t want to take the chance that they would be disturbed during nesting season by the bridge construction (see http://www.redding.com/news/2007/nov/28/caltrans-blocks-nest/). When the eagles didn’t take their bait, they decided to let them come back to where they had successfully bred for two years in a row, 2006 and 2007. I’m sure, even with the construction, they will breed here again this coming 2009 season.

    Hi Larry,

Just wanted to mention that my husband and I had the most remarkable experience Tuesday afternoon as we saw our first, here at our home in Oregon! He sat on the very tip of the fir tree for about an hour; so comical is the closeup as he looks like a little ole man. We wonder if we’ll see him again.
