For more than a month we’ve seen a Steller’s Jay with a Scrub Jay. They’re definitely good friends … perhaps more? Is this unusual?

Shari, according to Birds of North America Online, “Foraging ranges of Scrub and Steller’s jays overlap in coastal California; each species defends areas around its nest against the other species, but Scrub Jay generally is dominant over Steller’s.” Perhaps your two birds are first year immature birds? Apparently they don’t breed until their 2nd or 3rd year when males and females form apparently monogamous, long-term pair bonds.
