    Beautiful Acorn Woodpecker, Larry. The Junco looks kind of surprised, stopping short.
    Thanks for your visit to my blog. Our lot is too woody for Bluebird nest boxes, but they are all around us put up by neighbors. The main competitors here are the Tree Swallows; they are hard to keep out.

    @Theresa thank you and Merry Christmas!

    @Luisa thank you very much

    @Hilke the Junco was VERY surprised and put on the brakes rather quickly! Concerning the birdhouses; you don’t want to keep out the native species like the Tree Swallows. As a matter of fact, if you mount two houses about 25 feet apart, Bluebirds and Tree Swallows many times will each use one of the houses and help each other fend off intruders! True, Bluebirds will not nest in the woods unless there is sufficient open spaces nearby.

    Happy New Year Larry! Participating in a bird count has been on my bucket list for some time but I’ve never been able to actuallly do it. Maybe next year!
