Western Meadowlark photo by Larry Jordan
This Western Meadowlark was very cooperative yesterday as we toured the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge. We are looking forward to seeing the Cosumnes River Preserve today. Click on the photo or link to see more info on this beautiful, melodious songbird. And click here for more great Camera Critters photos!

Such a beautiful bird. I don’t think I’ve seen one of those before. Great shot!

Nice capture of a striking bird. (love the background, too) Yet, another place in CA I’d like to visit! I also enjoyed your bird photos below.

That’s a gorgeous shot, Larry. And a beautiful bird too. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen one in the wild.

Hi Larry,
From one fellow birder to another, your pictures are excellent.
It should also be noted that the Western Meadowlark is the state bird of your neighbors to the north, Oregon.
Birds are not easy to photography – you seem to have master this though!
Were you using a telephoto lens? Must have been… the depth of field is perfect – makes the eye see nothing but the beauty of the bird. Love its colouring.

@Niki-ann thank you. You can see either the Eastern or Western Meadowlark practically anywhere in the US. They will sit on wires or fences along side the roadway, singing their little hearts out. You can read more about them and hear their song here.
@GEL thank you very much. The background is called the bokeh. Defined as ” a Japanese term for the subjective aesthetic quality of out-of-focus areas of a photographic image”… glad you like it!
@Terri thanks and keep looking, you’ll find one, or an entire flock this time of year!
@Thomas thank you very much. Coming from you, I take that as a serious compliment!
@Wild Birds thank you very much for the comment and the information
@Manz thank you, I feel like I am getting there, slowly but surely. I use the Nikon D90 with an AF VR 80 – 400mm 1:4.5 – 5.6D lens.
