We Choose To Remember – Memorial Day

This is a day we choose to remember all the brave men and women who have fought so hard for our freedom.  I want to personally thank my father and my brother for their contribution to our country.  Please watch this short video and remember with me.

This is a photo of Redding California with a giant American Flag in the foreground.  It was taken from my window where I work.  The flag is maintained by our local Enterprise Lions Club to commemorate our soldiers.

I hope, wherever you are today, that you take a moment to remember the sacrifice of these brave men and women.  Many have given their lives so that we can live the way we do.

Lesser Goldfinch Male Preening photos by Larry Jordan

I suppose I should rephrase my title to read female Lesser Goldfinch building a nest because the male didn’t do any of the nest building at all.  He just sat there preening while his mate did all the work. [continue reading…]

Acorn Woodpeckers At My Feeders For Camera Critters

Acorn Woodpecker photos by Larry Jordan

I put up a couple of woodpecker feeders and got some visitors right away.  Acorn Woodpeckers have been visiting both of these feeders.  I expect to see some Downy Woodpeckers and maybe some Hairy and some Nuttall’s Woodpeckers later in the season.

This woodpecker feeder has twelve holes drilled into it, six on each of two sides, plus the other two sides have hardware cloth and are open to the woodpecker mix on the inside.  Here’s a shot of this male Acorn Woodpecker with his beak buried in one of the side holes of this Ultimate Woodpecker Feeder.

This is a suet feeder with a tail prop, specifically made for woodpeckers, although several other species feed on it.

The combination of this feeder with my suet recipe is guaranteed to bring in a variety of birds, including woodpeckers.

Check out all the other great critters at Camera Critters!

Osprey At Anderson River Park For Skywatch Friday

Osprey With Chick Under Wing photos by Larry Jordan

I went back to Anderson River Park to do some more Osprey watching today.  This time I took my Celestron C90  spotting scope and tried some digiscoping.  If you look closely under the wing, you can see an Osprey chick’s head.  I discovered today that this nest holds two Osprey chicks!

These photos were taken while this adult was waiting for their partner to bring back the evening meal.  Osprey eat fish almost exclusively and Anderson River Park, being located on the Sacramento River, offers a perfect location to build a nest.  Fish are abundant here.

I waited over an hour for the mate to bring in a fish and then missed the photo op when it arrived :-(.  I will attempt to get some in flight captures of these beautiful birds in the future and follow as the chicks get bigger and begin being more visible on the edge of the nest.

To see more great sky photos, visit Skywatch Friday!
