Cedar Waxwing With An American Robin For Bird Photography Weekly

Cedar Waxwing With An American Robin photo by Larry Jordan

There was a flock of American Robins I noticed as I was exiting the parking lot at work, in an oak tree.  So I stopped to take some photos.  When I looked through the camera, I saw some Cedar Waxwings too.  I observed them for a few minutes and noticed that there were two separate flocks, hanging out together, flying back and forth across from the oak tree to some trees near the hospital building where I work.

I came out at lunch time with my camera in the hope of getting some more photos.  It was a gorgeous day and there were picnic benches right below this berry bush where I got many more good captures of both the waxwings and the robins.

If anyone out there knows what kind of berry bush this is, I would sure like to know.  It was about 12 feet tall and had these blue berries all over it that the birds were going crazy for.  I will post some of the shots of them scarfing down the berries later.

Go check out the other great photos at Bird Photography Weekly!

I’ve always viewed waxwings as looking so smooth and soft, and this one isn’t any different. Especially sitting next to that robin. It’s like the waxwing is nicely pressed, and the robin just woke up.

Seeing the two of them together in that photo is a real treat! Your photo really brought out the vivid color in both birds.

Don’t know right off what kind of berries they are scarfing, but it looks like a good bush to plant if you want birds! Here’s hoping its native!

I wish I could tell you what that berry bush was, but then I’d have to kill you. LOL, nah, I just plain don’t know, sorry.

Sunday morning I spotted a Robin in our yard for the first time. My mom had seen it in years past, but not me. I managed a few shots in the rain. Then came the cedar waxwings, many many of them. But not once were they in the same tree together, wonderful shot!

Larry, Red and I have the same problem with a neighbor’s tree – we can’t identify it. And it has blue berries on it, too. That is the tree where we have seen not only a robin and many waxwings, but also the house finches and lesser goldfinches have been snacking on these berries. Great combo shot.

I recently came cross robins snacking on privet berries along with about 50 cedar waxwings and one ruby-crowned kinglet. Besides holly, they are the last berries to go around here. I didn’t get a photo of a robin with a waxwing, however!
    Very nice image.

sorry, I’m not sure what shrub it is but I have a Blue Muffin Viburnum with blue berries that is about that tall–12 feet. Might be that since I planted it for the fact that birds love it. But must have a male and a female viburnum shrub. [which I do]
Secondly, I have just 10 minutes ago had two flocks in my back yard for water in the birdbath. One flock was robins and the other cedar waxwings! They do hang out together and I have seen them do it in my backyard that is bird friendly. In fact, I just got back inside after filling the 4 birdbaths I have in the yard and now I see more robins and cedar waxwings out there. I love the waxwings but it’s a rare treat to have them around!
