Nuttall’s Woodpecker – Camera Critters #29

Nuttall’s Woodpecker photo by Larry Jordan

This is the best shot I could get of this Nuttall’s Woodpecker from the tee box on the golf course yesterday.  He was just working away on this oak tree while my buddies and I teed off 20 feet away.  However, I didn’t want you to go away without doing this bird justice.  So I posted this photo below taken by my friend Mark Schmitt.

This is a beautiful woodpecker we see quite often here in Northern California.

I think it was a good shot of the woodpecker, but have to admit your friends shot is well done

One of these fellers hollowed out a tree in front of my house. It fell where my car is normally parked. I was lucky… this time 😉

Good capture. There appears to be several woodpecker species that look identical.

Glad to see your photos of the nuttall woodpecker. It looks a little like our eastern downy woodpecker, a little bigger tho, and your nuttall has stripes across its back while the downy has a big white stripe. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a nuttall. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for visiting my blog and commenting on my mystery birds. I did get expert confirmation on the first bird being a greater yellowlegs and the second being a common snipe.
I always try and take alot of pics never know what you will snap…and with digital it is soooo easy to do just that! Hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend. Visit my site when you can 🙂

@marlou thanks for the comment. I love your shot of the butterfly? on your finger. What did you have the camera in your hand already or what?

@Lilli thanks and I must agree

@b13 lucky you! Glad you didn’t park there that day. It takes a long time for these little guys to hollow out a tree, must have been pretty old or already dead.

Hi Amila, you are right. The Nuttall’s can be confused with the Ladder-backed Woodpecker here in California but the Nuttall’s has more black on the cheek and the Ladder-backed’s barring on the back extends to the nape.
